01 · LEADERSHIP EDUCATION · CENTER FOR CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

A learning platform for the Center for Creative Leadership.

A digital learning platform for CCL, a global provider of leadership education, that CCL tailors for each of its client organizations: their own look, their own courses and assessments, their own learners.

Content
eBooks, eCourses, videos, PDFs, webinars

The need

CCL wanted one learning platform it could shape for clients on several continents, changing the interface and the features to suit each one, and use to train people in leadership and communication through courses and assessments.

What we built

  • The learning site, on CCL's iApps framework in ASP.NET, with Bootstrap, Telerik controls and WCF services
  • An admin site, the toolbox, built in MVC, for choosing which study materials each group of users gets
  • Content managed through the iApps CMS portal

What it does

  • Training materials tailored for each set of users
  • One library for eBooks, eCourses, videos, PDFs and webinars
  • Learners choose their own courses and assessments

The problem

Readings were collected by hand: error-prone, dependent on paper, and disconnected from the billing system. There was no structured way to manage routes, skip a parcel and come back, or recover when a sync failed in a low-signal area.

What we built

  • Routes downloaded to the device, parcels worked in order
  • Readings captured offline, synced when signal returns
  • Sync conflicts surfaced with detail, resolved in the field
  • Device cleanup with one-tap rollback

The outcome

  • Time to process a meter reading cycle cut by nearly 50%
  • Deployed to 20+ municipalities across the US
  • Structured route workflows in place of paper
  • No readings lost to signal gaps
  • Paper removed from the reads-to-billing handoff

03 · MUNICIPAL UTILITIES · MUNIBILLING

MuniServicePro: service calls in the field.

A cross-platform app for field technicians handling service calls across municipal utility networks, built for MuniBilling alongside MuniReadPro and used across the same 20+ municipalities.

The problem

Service requests were handled on paper, with frequent errors and rework, and customers felt it. The old web application needed a constant internet connection, which limited its use in the field.

What we built

  • A lightweight mobile app that works online and offline
  • Technicians download their assigned jobs before they go out
  • Photos captured on site, synced once back in signal

The outcome

  • Paperwork removed, with fewer errors
  • Photos that confirm the work was done, as it is done
  • Field operations that move faster, with less rework
04 · PUBLIC SECTOR · PARKS AND TRAILS

Piedmont Discovery: a public app three local governments rely on.

A parks and trails app for the City of Greensboro, the City of High Point and Guilford County. We designed it in 2017, built it in 2018 for the City of Greensboro, rebuilt it in React Native at the end of 2022, and support it today under annual support contracts.

What it is

A public parks and trails app. The same app serves the City of Greensboro, the City of High Point and Guilford County.

How it has changed

Designed in 2017 and built in 2018 for the City of Greensboro. At the end of 2022 we rebuilt it in React Native, a cross-platform framework.

How it is looked after

Under annual support contracts. The current contracts run from February 2026. The clients own the source code.

The need

CBX Global had bought CargoWise One. Its people were busy running operations, with little time to rethink how the systems fitted together.

What we did

As a CargoWise partner, we integrated CargoWise One with the Great Plains accounting system CBX Global already used.

The outcome

CargoWise and the accounting system talking to each other, with real-time visibility across both.

“All project aspects were completed in a timely and professional manner.”

06 · FREIGHT AND LOGISTICS · APPLIED AI

MVPNot in production. No results claimed.

Customs brokerage AI: an MVP built with brokerage partners.

We are building a custom solution in partnership with customs brokerage companies: simple, focused tools that turn slow steps in preparing an entry into fast ones.

Focus
The processes that take brokers the most time
A document through the process
Capture01Check02Classify03File04Amend05

The first question

Where does AI give the most return: for the brokers, for their clients, or for both? The answer starts with which processes consume the most time, because time saved is cost saved, and errors cost even more.

The principle

Build simple, focused tools that turn a slow process into a fast one, and build them with the brokers who feel the problem.

Where AI removes work

Six areas, set out below against the stage of the process they belong to.

01 Capture
Automated data entry
Reading documents such as commercial invoices with OCR, in place of manual input.
01 Capture
Pre-populated fields
Frequently used fields filled from earlier entries and stored data.
02 Check
Real-time validation
Information checked against regulatory requirements as it is entered, so errors are caught early.
03 Classify
HS code classification
HS codes suggested or checked, where manual classification is slow and error-prone.
04 File
Workflow automation
Repetitive tasks such as document review, data input and status checks handled automatically.
05 Amend
Fast-tracked amendments
Discrepancies in documents found and corrected quickly, without a long manual review.
07 · DATA AND PLATFORMS · CLIENTS NOT NAMED

Making systems that slowed down fast again.

Three pieces of engineering work on systems that had outgrown their original design.

Practice

Tools

Multi-tenant SaaS

Load that grew with every tenant

Database load rose with each new tenant and latency spiked at peak.

  • Queries partitioned by tenant
  • Connection pooling and result caching
  • Index work and read replicas
  • Lock contention removed

High-traffic API

An API that held back the product

Response times degraded under load and slowed every new feature.

  • Monolith split into domain services
  • Request queuing and async jobs
  • Circuit breakers and caching
  • Shorter, safer deployments

Reporting platform

Reports that took minutes

Dashboards timed out on large datasets. The database, not the interface, was the bottleneck.

  • Full table scans found and indexed
  • Aggregation tables and materialized views
  • Query monitoring left in place
  • Reports back to seconds
